Apple tried to make the Apple Watch work with Android phones
Following the lawsuit filed by the US Department of Justice against Apple, accusing the company of holding an unlawful monopoly over the smartphone market and associated services, Apple has shared an unexpected revelation.
For quite some time, Apple has faced criticism for its closed ecosystem, which limits interoperability with non-Apple devices. Surprisingly, it seems that Apple made efforts to enable its Apple Watch to function with Android phones.
Reportedly, Apple explored this possibility for three years, responding to the accusations of ecosystem gatekeeping by the DOJ.
Apple’s Apple Watch is currently only compatible with iPhones. This strategic compatibility makes it more expensive for users to switch to a non-Apple smartphone, as it would entail abandoning their Apple Watch for a new, Android-compatible smartwatch.
Apple cites technological constraints as the reason for the Apple Watch’s inability to work with Android phones. It is noteworthy that while there were previous reports suggesting this limitation, Apple has only recently acknowledged it.
